5 Stillness Practices You Can Do in Under 5 Minutes

Short on time? These five stillness and breathwork practices take less than 5 minutes each and help you reset during a busy day. No app or equipment needed.

Why Stillness Matters

You don't need 30 minutes of meditation to feel calmer. Research shows that even brief moments of intentional stillness — as short as 60 seconds — can lower cortisol levels and shift your nervous system out of fight-or-flight mode.

The key is consistency, not duration.

5 Practices Under 5 Minutes

1. Box Breathing (2 minutes)

Used by Navy SEALs to stay calm under pressure.

  • Breathe in for 4 seconds
  • Hold for 4 seconds
  • Breathe out for 4 seconds
  • Hold for 4 seconds
  • Repeat 4–6 times
  • This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and slows your heart rate within 90 seconds.

    2. Body Scan Check-In (3 minutes)

Starting from your toes, mentally scan upward. Notice where you're holding tension — jaw, shoulders, hands. Don't try to fix it. Just notice. Tension dissolves faster when you acknowledge it than when you ignore it.

    3. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique (2 minutes)

    Name:

  • 5 things you can see
  • 4 things you can touch
  • 3 things you can hear
  • 2 things you can smell
  • 1 thing you can taste
  • This pulls your attention out of anxious thought loops and into your physical environment.

    4. One-Minute Silence (1 minute)

Set a timer. Close your eyes. Do nothing. When thoughts arise, let them pass like clouds. This is the simplest stillness practice and arguably the hardest.

    5. Gratitude Anchor (2 minutes)

Think of one specific thing from today — not a grand achievement, something small. The warmth of coffee. A text from a friend. Hold that feeling for 30 seconds. Gratitude practices literally rewire your brain's negativity bias over time (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).

    Make It a Habit

The best stillness practice is the one you'll actually do. Pick one. Attach it to something you already do — after coffee, before lunch, right before bed. Two minutes a day compounds into a fundamentally different relationship with your own mind.
